If the thought of jumping out of bed in the morning and skipping the makeup portion of your a.m. routine has you sighing in dreamy relief, then permanent makeup may be right for you. Permanent makeup is a type of cosmetic tattooing that injects pigment into areas where makeup is usually applied: the lips, eyelids, brows, and cheeks. When properly applied, the results are attractive, realistic – and incredibly time-saving.
One of the most common questions we hear at EnLighten Skin & Body Medspa is, “Just how permanent is permanent makeup?” That’s understandable. After all, the look you’re going for today may not be the look you want for the rest of your life.
The good news is that while permanent makeup does deliver long-lasting results they aren’t going to be visible for the rest of your life.
The Permanency of Permanent Makeup
In most cases, permanent makeup will last between 3 and 5 years, depending on the colors applied and how the patient’s skin responds to the pigmentation. The makeup will appear darker than you expected immediately after application but will fade as your skin heals. Gradually, over the course of months and years, the pigment will fade even further. Eventually, the pigment may fade so much that a fresh application of makeup is required. You can choose to touch up your existing permanent makeup or explore a new look. How long permanent makeup lasts varies from person to person as body chemistry plays an important role in how well the pigments are retained in the skin.
Caring For Permanent Makeup
Proper care of permanent makeup can affect how long it lasts and its appearance. Similar to anything else that contains pigment or color, exposure to sunlight, water, and the elements will hasten fading. Lighter colors tend to fade quicker than darker colors.
The best way to prolong your permanent makeup is to:
- Wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 45.
- Do not use exfoliants on the area and avoid chemical peels or facials.
- Use mild cleansers and products on your face.
- Protect the area with Vaseline before swimming.
- Get regular touch-ups. Lighter colors may need a touchup 10-12 months after application. Darker colors may not need a touchup for a year or so.
- Discuss your medications with your esthetician; some can increase the fade rate of permanent makeup.
